Thailand’s New Digital Nomad Visa: Here’s What You Need to Know
Thailand is now offering a special visa for digital nomads, freelancers, and remote workers. This new Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) lets you stay in the country for up to 180 days at a time, and you can come back as often as you like over five years.
This visa is a lot easier to get than the Long-Term Resident Visa, which has stricter rules like higher income requirements and specific employer criteria.
Tourism is a huge part of Thailand’s economy. With its incredible culture, stunning scenery, and rich history, Thailand draws millions of tourists every year. Tourism makes up about 12-20 percent of the country’s GDP. Just this year, in the first half, Thailand welcomed 17.5 million tourists—a 35% increase from last year.
Who Can Apply?
The DTV isn’t just for digital nomads. It’s also for people who are:
- Learning Thai cooking
- Attending seminars
- Going to music festivals
- Training in Muay Thai
- Joining sports camps
- Getting medical treatment
What Do You Need?
To apply, you must:
- Be at least 20 years old
- Have at least 500,000 baht (around US$14,197) in savings for three months
- Show a remote work contract, a medical appointment, or an acceptance letter for an activity
- Submit a portfolio of your work
You can also bring your spouse and kids if you can prove your relationship with documents like a marriage or birth certificate.
Cost
The visa fee is 10,000 baht (about US$284).
This visa is part of Thailand’s effort to attract more visitors who can contribute to the economy in different ways. As tourism recovers, the DTV is expected to play a big role in keeping this important sector strong.
